Czechia defeat Great Britain in two close singles matches
The Lexus Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team lost out in the quarter-finals against Czechia 2-0 after two tough singles matches.
Playing in the first tie of this year's Finals, Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter went toe-to-toe with Czechia's all-star squad but found themselves on the losing side in big moments.
Kartal was a break-up in the final set before losing out to world No.26 Marie Bouzkova in three sets, while Boulter lost out to Wimbledon champion and world No.6 Linda Noskova.
Great Britain have now reached the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in four of the last five years - reaching three semi-finals and one quarter-final.
Match one: Bouzkova beats Kartal in three-set epic
Kartal delivered an impressive performance in the opening match of the tie but was edged out 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 by Lexus Nottingham Open champion Bouzkova after three hours on court.
Playing her first match since March, Kartal made a flying start, breaking the world No.26 in the second game with a clean backhand winner. Bouzkova responded immediately, however, and the pair traded blows in a closely contested opening set.
The Brit looked poised to strike at 5-4, holding a 0-30 lead on Bouzkova's serve, but the Czech dominated the tie-break. A couple of untimely errors from Kartal helped Bouzkova race to a 6-1 advantage before sealing the set with a sharp-angled winner.
Kartal bounced back in the second set, breaking in the opening game and raising her level on serve. Although she was unable to convert two set points on Bouzkova's serve at 5-3, she dropped just two points behind her first serve throughout the set and wrapped it up with an ace in the following game.
The 24-year-old created opportunities in the decider, leading 2-0 and earning a break point at 2-2, but Bouzkova found another gear to reel off four straight games and take control.
Kartal saved three match points and pulled a break back to keep her hopes alive, but Bouzkova ultimately sealed victory with a break to love in the final game.
Match two: Noskova seals the tie against Boulter
Wimbledon champion Noskova booked Czechia's place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over a spirited Boulter in one hour and 43 minutes.
Noskova made a blistering start and looked every bit a Grand Slam champion, racing through the opening four games before Boulter got on the scoreboard.
While the Brit settled into the match with a couple of comfortable holds late in the set, she was unable to carve out any break point opportunities against the world No.6, who wrapped up the opener 6-2.
Boulter carried momentum from the closing stages of the first set into the second, raising her level and bringing more aggression to her game. The British No.1 struck winners freely and lifted the energy, but could not find a way to break clear against the Czech.
The 30-year-old showed her fighting spirit at 4-4, firing three aces in one game to save two break points and force a second-set tie-break.
Noskova had served impressively throughout, but elevated her level once again in the tie-break. Three more aces, taking her match tally to 15, and two mini-breaks were enough to seal her sixth consecutive Billie Jean King Cup victory and secure the tie for Czechia.
