Day eight: Klugman wins Wrexham title
Hannah Klugman won the biggest title of her career after an impressive final performance against Elsa Jacquemot at the Lexus Wrexham Open.
The 17-year-old defeated the French star 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the W100 title without dropping a set all week.
She becomes the second successive British player to win the Wrexham title after Mimi Xu last year, and is the youngest British woman to win a singles trophy at W100-level or higher.
Klugman pressed the world No.157 straight from the first game. Despite missing her first two break point opportunities, she got her reward just two games later.
A double break for the Brit sealed an emphatic first set, and she picked up where she left off in the second, racing out to a 5-1 lead.
In the biggest match of her career so far, Klugman had to fight to get over the line. Jacquemot got back to 5-4 before the Brit served out the victory at the second time of asking.
In the women's doubles final, Freya Christie and Eden Silva defeated fourth seeds, Hiroko Kuwata and Ankita Raina 6-2, 6-3 to lift the title.
This is the fifth trophy together this season and the fourth on home soil.

Hannah Klugman, world No.341, was the first finalist through in front of a near sell-out crowd at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre.
The 17-year-old Brit progressed through to the biggest final of her career after a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jodie Burrage.
Klugman commented: “I was very happy and a lot of positive thoughts, it’s a nice feeling knowing all of your hard work pays off as these are the big moments you play for. It’s a great feeling”
After winning her first match on the WTA tour this summer in Nottingham, Klugman is looking to win the biggest title of her professional career after she won a W50 in Portugal last month. Just reaching tomorrow’s final pushes her ranking 104 places higher, gifting her a career-high ranking of world No.237 and higher if she wins the title.
Klugman hasn’t lost a set this week in Wrexham, and the most games she has lost in a single match is six.
“I’ve been training really well, and I know my level is there. The crowd were amazing today and definitely split 50/50 for the match today!”
On route to the final Klugman has beaten only one seeded player in the quarter-finals, sixth seed Rebecca Sramkova, but has beaten three players ranked higher than her en route to the final.
The second singles semifinal saw Elsa Jacquemot of France beat Suzan Lamens of Netherlands 6-2, 7-6(4).
Both previous top 100 players, they delivered world-class tennis that the Wrexham crowd of nearly 500 loved.
After the match Jacquemot said, “My match was very hard, Suzan played really well. I’m really happy to win this match. I’m so excited to play tomorrow.
“The second set was difficult after it went to a tie-break, but I’m really happy I won the match”.
On the doubles side, another British clash saw Freya Christie and Eden Silva triumph over the youngsters Daniella Britton and Klugman 7-6(4), 6-4.
They will face fourth seeds, Hiroko Kuwata and Ankita Raina in Sunday’s Final.
There will be an all-British semi-final at the Lexus Wrexham Open on Saturday with Hannah Klugman and Jodie Burrage set to compete for a place in the final.
Klugman continued her excellent run in Wrexham on Friday, knocking out sixth seed Rebecca Sramkova 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour.
The world No.341 – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – hasn’t dropped a set in her first three matches this week.
"I'm definitely happy about my performance today," she said. "Being in the semis of a W100 is new ground for me and also I'm playing against some really high-level players. She's obviously been 33 in the world, so to see my level's kind of there is really exciting."
In the last match of the day, wild card Burrage clinched a 6-1, 6-4 win over fifth seed and world No.130 Marina Bassols.
Burrage had an electric start, winning the first five consecutive games and broke her opponent three times in the second set.
Saturday's semi-final will be a first meeting between the Surrey-based duo.
However, Britain’s Alicia Dudeney bowed out to France’s Elsa Jacquemot in straight sets.
The 23-year-old led by a break three times in the opening set against Jacquemot, but the French star fought back to defeat the Brit 7-6(3), 6-2.
Dudeney was on a seven-match winning streak coming into the quarter-final, having won her sixth World Tennis Tour title of the year in Edgbaston last week.
Jacquemot is set to face either Suzan Lamens or Dalayna Hewitt in the second semi-final.
Britain's Alicia Dudeney, Jodie Burrage and Hannah Klugman are all in to the quarter-finals of the Lexus Wrexham Open, after a successful day for the Brits in Wales.
Dudeney - who is the most successful player on the World Tennis Tour this season with six titles - upset seventh seed Susan Bandecchi in a three-set epic.
The British star came through with a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 win, finishing on her sixth match point after two hours and 53 minutes.
"That was a very long match," Burrage said. "It was really nice to get through that one. I think I played really well today, it was a great match. Susan is a very tricky opponent, she fights unbelievably hard, so it was really nice to get over the finish line."
Former top-100 star Burrage clinched a statement win over fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue.
The 27-year-old saved two set points in the second set to defeat the German 6-1, 7-6(9).
British stars Jodie Burrage and Alicia Dudeney will join Hannah Klugman in the second round of the Lexus Wrexham Open after picking up straight-sets wins on Wednesday.
Burrage was first up on Show Court against Dutch star Eva Vedder, coming through 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 21 minutes.
"I'm really happy to get through," said Burrage, who has been ranked as high as 85 in the world. "She's a really tough player and has won a lot of tournaments this year. I think she's at a career-high, so happy that I could get some good tennis out on court. She put up a good fight in that second set. I'm glad I managed to hold onto it and close it out when I could."
Then it was over to Dudeney, who knocked out Germany's Tessa Brockman 6-4, 6-4.
The 23-year-old is now on a six-match winning streak after winning her sixth title of the year in Edgbaston last week. She currently leads the World Tennis Tour with the most singles titles won in 2026 so far.
"It was really good," said Dudeney. "I thought I played really well out there. I think it was a great first match.
"Hopefully (I can) carry last week into this week and keep trying to play the right way, playing good tennis, and hopefully the results will follow."
In the second round, Burrage will play fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue, while Dudeney takes on seventh seed and world No.139 Susan Bandecchi.
Elsewhere, second seed Alina Charaeva was knocked out in the first round by Czech player Anna Siskova. Armenia's Charaeva hit the headlines earlier this month by beating world No.1 Elena Rybakina in the China Open, but she was unable to build on taking the first set as Siskova, who will play British No.10 Klugman in round two tomorrow, hit back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
World No.616 Dalayna Hewitt upset eighth seed Ayla Aksu 6-4, 6-3, and Lucie Havlickova beat Carole Monnet 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Elsa Jacquemot defeated Sofya Lansere 7-5, 6-2, and Victoria Morvayova raced through against Ankita Raina 6-2, 6-1.
Hannah Klugman has got the Brits off to a winning start on the first day of main draw action at the Lexus Wrexham Open after confidently beating American Fiona Crawley 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and seven minutes.
The British star will face either second seed Alina Charaeva or Anna Siskova in the second round. Charaeva recently defeated world No.1 Elena Rybakina at the China Open in Beijing.
Amelia Rajecki missed out on the chance to join Klugman in the second round after falling short to Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens 6-4, 6-2.
Elsewhere, top seed Anna Blinkova also secured victory on her opening clash against Lithuania's Andre Lukosiute, and former world No.33 Rebecca Sramkova came through a testing battle against Mona Barthel.
Meanwhile, Daniella Britton is still to come as she prepares to contest her first round match against Lizette Cabrera. The British wild card was crowned winner of the Lexus Wrexham Open One Point Grand last night.
Alicia Dudeney and Jodie Burrage are in action on Wednesday. Dudeney will face Tessa Johanna Brockman in the first round off the back of her tour-leading sixth World Tennis title last week. Burrage plays Netherlands' Eva Vedder in the her opening match.
Anna-Lena Friedsam booked her place in Lexus Wrexham Open's main draw - with a number of British players in action tomorrow.
German star Friedsam, currently ranked as the world No.242, was seeded No.1 in the qualifying rounds and booked a place in the main draw of the World Tennis Tour W100 tournament. She will face Italian Noemi Basitelli in the first round tomorrow.
Friedsam, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2016, was a 7-6, 6-3 winner over British player Victoria Allen in today's opening match in the Carden Park Arena at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, overturning a 3-0 deficit in the second set to complete victory.
The two other British players in action in the final qualifying round were also beaten by higher ranked players today. Germany's Tessa Johanna Brockmann got the better of Eliz Maloney 6-3, 6-3, while Estonian Elena Malygina, who reached the semi-finals at last year's Lexus Wrexham Open, was a 6-3, 6-2 winner against Alice Gillan.
There were also wins for Lizette Cabrera, Sofya Lansere, Dalayna Hewitt, Caroline Werner and Andre Lukosiute.
Three British wild cards will be in first round singles action tomorrow, with Hannah Klugman drawn against American Fiona Crawley, while Daniella Britton will face Australian Cabrera and Ameila Rajecki will play Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands.
The Wrexham event is the biggest women's tennis tournament, outside of the grass court season, in the UK this year, with a high-quality entry list of British and international players hoping to feature in Sunday's final.
It includes a number of players from the world's top 200, including two, Anna Blinkova and Alina Charaeva, both currently ranked in the top 100, and is the strongest field in terms of attracting the most top 200 players in the history of this event.
Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam, the No.1 seed in qualifying, progressed to the next round with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over British wild card Sophie Bekker.
Friedsam, currently ranked world No.242 with a career-high of 45, will next meet Victoria Allen, a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 winner against Leticia Romanova in an all-British contest.
Another clash between two Brits unfortunately ended early owing to Indianna Spink having to retire through injury having lost the opening set 6-2 against Eliz Maloney, who impressively reached the quarter-finals of this W100 event in 2022 when the tournament was played in Shrewsbury before moving to Wrexham.
Maloney's next opponent tomorrow will be Germany's Tessa Johanna Brockmann, a 6-3, 6-4 winner against British player Mia Wainwright.
Lois Newberry, another of the Brits in action on the opening day, was just edged out in the third set 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 by much higher-ranked American Dalayna Hewitt.
Estonia's Elena Malygina, who reached the Lexus Wrexham Open semi-finals last year, lost the opening set to British player Savannah Dada-Mascoll before responding positively to advance to the next round. Dada-Mascoll impressively won the opener against an opponent ranked more than 1,000 places higher, before Malygina, the current world No.265, hit back to progress 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
She next faces Alice Gillan tomorrow after she got the better of fellow Brit Lily Hutchings 6-3, 6-2, while Amelie Brooks lost 6-3, 6-3 against Germany's Caroline Werner.
Three British wild cards made first qualifying round exits. Annabel Wong took the first set before losing 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Czech player Petra Sedlackova, while Rosie Cho went down 6-2, 6-1 to Japan's Mayuka Aikawa and Liv Zingg lost 6-2, 6-4 to India's Ankita Raina.

Handed a tough draw against Australian Lizette Cabrera, currently ranked world No.312 in the world having been as high as 119, Davies was beaten 6-1, 6-1.
